A marquetry table exhibiting Yosegi-zaiku - a traditional Japanese craft which produces intricate geometric patterns formed from various woods.
The pine top is cleated and veneered in several species of wood including; elm, maple and zelkova. Interspersed are four Yosegi panels each of different design.
All is raised on three elm tapering legs joined by a similarly veneered under tier. Wedges and dovetail joints are utilised to secure the legs to both the top and lower tier which, in essence, meant that it could be disassembled for ease of transport.
Usable, some movement but fine for perching your cup of coffee! One wedge historically replaced to the under tier. One small section of veneer absent to the edge of the top. General wear commensurate with age.
Japan, circa 1910.
