A collection of five penny licks, so called as they provided a serving of ice cream for the sum of one penny. The glass would be licked clean and then returned to the vendor for reuse.

By the early 20th century they had largely fallen out of use due to hygiene concerns and the increasing popularity of the ice cream cone.

Of simplistic stocky form, each one has a shallow depression in their bowl into which a single scoop would be placed. The thickness of the glass intentionally helped to obscure the volume making it appear that the customer would be getting more for their money.

Overall in good condition with a chip present to the foot of one glass.

British Isles, second half of the 19th century.

Height of each glass 9.5cm
Diameter of each glass 5.6cm
