A fine pair of earthenware platters produced by the Annfield Pottery, established by John Thomson, which operated between 1826-1887.
A basket is painted centrally on each with various flowers springing forth – some of which are sponged. The scalloped rim is further decorated with a repeated stylised sponged print.
To their reverse is an impressed ‘12’ along with ‘stone ware J.T’ enclosed within a shield thus identifying them as having been made at the Pottery.
One small chip is present to the rim of one platter. Other imperfections from new would indicate that these were sold as seconds and exported to Ireland for resale (as was the case with the vast majority of spongeware here).
Scottish, made in Glasgow at the Annfield Pottery, circa 1840.
Each measure:
Height 29.1cm
Width 36.1cm
