A diminutive commode masquerading as a chest of four drawers!

Such furniture was not the product of whimsy – it was the social norm during the 18th century for one’s bedroom to serve as a reception for guests, so naturally the furnishings had to maintain propriety. By day guests could pass by such a chest unaware of its true, unsavoury purpose while by night it could be left open for convenience.

The four cock-beaded drawer fronts are veneered in choice quilted mahogany and retain their original brass pulls. The top two fronts – their carcass of mahogany and pine – rise being hinged to the underside of the solid mahogany top. This too is hinged and when erect can be supported, if desired, by rotating a small arm which rests flush to the top of the righthand side (this is an old though evidently later addition).

The interior is fitted with sinuous mahogany arms and an oak seat which lifts to reveal a space below. Originally a more prominent fixture for a chamber pot would have been present although this alteration permits a quirky modern home use of both seat and storage. Imagine wooing your guests with this!

The sides are solid mahogany – where the original carrying handles remain – as are the bracket feet and the remainder of the carcass is of oak.

Gracefully showing its age with delightful patination.

Solid and usable.
