A pine chest of two over two drawers expressively grained to imitate oak.

This particularly diminutive example is synonymous of a type of furniture produced during the Victorian period to suit the budget of the growing lower middle class. Painting and graining gave the impression of more expensive timber thus it was a popular practice when one’s furnishings expressed their social standing.

All of the drawers are of dovetailed construction and run smoothly. The fronts feature contrasting moulding and slightly oversized pulls.

Raised on four turned feet.

Solid and usable. Some historic flight holes.

British Isles, circa 1870.
