A finely proportioned rosewood open armchair by Gillows, bearing their stamp to the underside of the front seat rail.
The distinct fluting to the front legs, the cavetto shaping to the inside of the underarm supports and the sinuous fluidity of the back uprights into the rear legs all epitomise the quality associated with the firm.
Raised on Cope & Collinson Patent porcelain castors – brass cup to the front and brass box to the rear.
The wool work upholstery is clean and intact while the arms show some wear. All of the braiding is present but loose in places. The webbing and springs are sound.
The frame is solid and all is perfectly usable.
English, by Gillows, circa 1850.
