A mahogany open armchair designed to be collapsed in great haste.
Its form is derived from that of more elaborate chairs of the period but has been cleverly constructed, by way hinged components, to neatly fold away.
This design is largely associated with the navy to enable quick clearing of the decks when the call to arms was made.
The arms split from the tenoned uprights by means of a ratchet allowing the hinged cane seat to rise. A push of the front seat rail sees the side rails and stretchers fold in on themselves in a concertina motion.
A ‘P’ is struck to the underside of the back seat rail.
The surface is naturally worn in the best possible way, testament to a life of service - if only it could talk, what stories could it regale!
The front stretcher has been historically replaced, as have some of the hinges (which is not uncommon for this type of chair). The right seat rail exhibits a restored split. The ratchet system beneath the arms doesn't function although the tenons still fit snuggly into the mortises.
British Isles, circa 1800.
