I was working in the lab late one night…
Just kidding, however, the working repairs and alterations to this otherwise very humble chair give it serious Frankenstein’s Monster vibes!
A lath-back Windsor armchair with a square plank elm seat and plain vase-shaped splat. The pear top, along with many of the other components, are of beech whilst the legs and stretchers are of ash/oak.
The original red stain remains largely present and naturally worn in places and a maker's mark is struck into the rear of the seat - possibly that of George Mead of West Wycombe.
What really sets this chair apart is the overengineered metal central stretcher and bracing. It shows the esteem in which this chair was held by the lengths the original owner would go to – perhaps embracing a particular available skillset in light of the absence of a woodturner or chairmaker.
There are further historic repairs including an old break to one lath and to the front left of the seat.
Despite this, the chair remains solid, usable and above all else comfortable.
English, circa 1860.
