A breakfast, or Pembroke, table of exceptional quality and very much in the manner of one of Thomas Chippendale’s designs.
The top is veneered in choice mahogany with both leaves being book matched producing a real fluidity to the rippling grain pattern. This has been laid on straight grained mahogany boards – a practice only employed by the very best workshops.
All is raised on four square chamfered legs with turned mahogany stretchers in an x-shaped formation. These retain a later worn stain intended to conceal some historic breaks.
The broad cock-beaded mahogany drawer front retains its original brass pull (collars are mismatched) whilst the sides and base are of oak. All is finely dovetailed with old paper lining to the interior concealing the original lining beneath.
The side rails are of oak as are the flies and knuckle joints. The tips of three of the flies have been trimmed at a time. The back apron is mahogany veneer on oak and exhibits a handful of historic flight-holes.
Originally all would have been raised on leather castors and yet still it stands in perfect proportion.
Wear commensurate with age throughout.Solid and usable - versatile and beautiful.
